Pattern Description: Fly-front shorts with partial dart, shaped front yoke and slant pocket. Back has dart and patch pocket. Shaped waistband. Raw hem. Waistband is 1cm below natural waist.
The pattern is part of a mix-n-match design that has two main pants blocks with a series of leg, waist, pocket and closure options. Knip suggest these variations from the four examples they made for the issue. Really is food for thought. (A bit off topic maybe, but the pattern piece for the drawstring channel is shaped to match the curve of the waistband. Mmmm! The same issue has done the same concept of mix/match design with a jacket, shirt, dress and yoked shirt. Well worth a look.)
Pattern Sizing: 34-46. Consistent with other KnipMode pants drafts
Fabric Used: a supple pale blue 10oz denim with white topstitching. My local fabric store was able to find me 10m of this fabric a little while back. It has been so hard to find light blue denim that I've had it under lock and key until now.
Alterations / design changes: My standard petiting adjustments of shortening the crotch length. Because of the slant pocket, I drafted in a pocket stay, seaming the denim and lighter cotton fabric along the dart line. The pocket lining was also cut out of quilting fabric to reduce the bulk.
Instructions: The instructions are in Dutch and I didn't need to translate them. I just used the tech drawing and pattern layout as a guide.
I used a triple zigzag along the leg hems to control the amount of fraying the edges will do
Likeness to pattern photo/drawing: They look alot like the drawing and the magazine photo.
Likes & Dislikes: I like the style of these as they are just that little different to a standard jeans short. The darts front and back give nice shaping. Very very nice! Would work very nicely as a full length jean as well.
Sew again? Recommend it? Definitely a keeper and I'm keen to try varying the pattern. It's kind of a 'soft' entry into making your own patterns. Definitely recommend it.

JDpenelope said... Beautiful shorts and interesting pattern. I like how the front yoke extends over the fly. I also had a hard time finding 10 oz denim, only mine was stretch. Good idea to triple zig zag the unfinished hem. 1/12/12 8:19 AM
