**I wrote up a dog collar tutorial on how to make the collars with the ribbons on top like the carrot one. The fabric covered one is essentially the same steps but instead of sewing the decorative ribbon on top, the nylon strap is covered with fabric. **
I made these dog collars for my basset hound since all the collars in our local pet stores were just down right boring. They were just bare straps in different solid colors. Add insult to injury they wanted to charge an arm and a leg for them. Well that's why I sew.
The make the collar I used 1" nylon straps from Joann's. These are in the notions areas and you can get them cut to any length. I used white for fabrics that are light like the leave print one. Black for darker fabrics like the candy corn one. For the carrot one I used green because I didn't cover it with fabric. It's just ribbon sewn on top.
Other notions are the plastic bucket is the curved kind so it fits nice around his neck. Large D-ring for his tags and a rounded metal slide for adjustability. These I bought online.
For the fabric I mainly used cotton printed fabrics. The come in different prints for each holiday/season. And are easily washed in the washing machine. On the first few that I made, I made the mistake of picking prints that were too large or the repeat were too large. Like on the St. Patrick's day one all you'd see is a green background and very little of the "kiss me I'm Irish" parts.
These are simple to make and dog is styling all year long. Not that he cares but I like it.
