| Another Version - April 7, 2013
Obviously, I love this pattern. It is out of print but still available on Ebay and Etsy.
I made this from a very nice cotton-lycra German fabric from naturesfabrics.com with a white cotton-lycra trim on the neck and armholes, also from naturesfabrics.com.
It is in my new usual size 10 with no alterations other than adding 2 inches in length. Contrary to my last review, it fits fine with a regular bra (I may have shrunk some more).
I made it the same way as the elephant top except that I topstitched the neck and armholes with a straight stitch and added some fusible web to the hem before topstitching with a wide double coverstitch. I was going to see if I could get by without topstitching the neck or armhole at all, but the seam allowances kept wanting to flip out.
Original Version - This is a pattern for fitted knit tops with neckline and sleeve variations. I made view F, a sleeveless, mock wrap top with neck and armhole bands.
Recommended fabrics are stretch knits such as cotton interlock, jerseys, matte jerseys, lightweight double knits and stretch velvet. I made mine from cotton lycra knits from fabric.com. I fell so in love with this elephant print that I got it in two colorways. I used pink elephants for Kwiksew 2874.
I made a size 10. I'd made this pattern long ago in a 12, but running and becoming a vegetarian have shrunk me. The only alteration that I made was to lengthen the top by 2 inches; this top is quite short (I'm only 5 ft. 4 in.).
Here's how I made it: I sewed the front pieces to the back at the shoulders with a straight stitch, stabilizing with stay tape. I sewed the neck band to the neck with a narrow zigzag (this is a 3/8 inch seam). I sewed the left front to the right front with a narrow zigzag following the stitches from attaching the neck band. I topstitched with a narrow double coverstitch. I stitched the side seams with the serger. I sewed the armhole band together with a straight stitch and attached it to the armhole with a narrow zigzag. I again topstitched with a narrow double coverstitch. I turned under the hem and topstitched with a narrow double coverstitch.
I love this top. The fit is perfect for me, but if you are bigger than an A cup, you may need to alter the fit. I've got a sports bra on in this photo. I first tried it on with a molded cup bra, and it pulled terribly. |
