|Pattern Description: |
Knee length lined high-waisted dress with halter neck and zipper closure. Shirred waistband
(14-16-18-20) I did size 18
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
For the most part, with the exception of the band around the middle (see below). Finished dress here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/77319537@N08/6995521160/
Were the instructions easy to follow?
Mostly. The instructions often didn't tell you how the different pattern markings should match up. For example, the markings on the shirred midriff was nowhere near matching up with the piece underneath & it was unclear if they should have. Some extra help here would have been nice. Also, the pattern piece said to gather (in a horizontal direction) which made no sense. I ignored the pattern at that point and just made it up as I went along.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I really liked the bodice - after adjusting to make the cup fuller, I think it turned out well. I made this for a friend who liked that despite showing lots of skin on the top, her 'girls' were secure in the halter top - even when dancing.
Dislike: The fullness around the top of the skirt portion seemed a bit too much. It might look better if it were a fabric that didn't have as much bulk, or if the band were set a bit lower. Same with the shirred band around the middle - was a bit too full. Perhaps this was just due to errors I made in construction.
Satin with underlining using organza (bodice) or poplin (waistband), lace netting overlaid on the bottom
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
Bodice: I made a fuller cup (slit from the bust point and added a wedge below) and made a more modest neckline by adding to the top edge of the neckline (added ~2cm to the top corner, grading down to the corner at the other end of top of the pattern piece piece).
Zip: Moved the zip to the side and removed the centre back seam.
Skirt: Reduced fullness at the top of the skirt by taking about 2 inches off each side seam of the pattern (with centre seam removed). Pleated rather than gathered the material at the waist.
Middle band: I made tucks at the edges and tacked it down in places so the waist looks smaller.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
I probably won't sew it again. I made it for a friend who's quite a different shape and I don't think it would suit me. I'd recommend it as a dress that will likely be quite comfortable, and should be flattering for someone that has cleavage to show off but doesn't have a tiny waist.
A nice dress, but needs some skill in alterations to produce a well-fitted dress from the pattern.
