Very nice shorts. The waist band problem you described made me wonder if finding a basic man's pattern that fits you well would be a good start since you say your straight hipped. Then you could use that as a reliable alteration to women's patterns you like. Another thought is to choose women's pattern sizing by waist measurement and slice away the hip curve.

Thanks Elcue - I've made five or six pairs of trousers and shorts now and think I've come up with a master. Good idea though
