If you didn't gather the fabric first, the ribbing would be all stretched out at the seam. I'd gather, per the instructions, and serge or zigzag the ribbing on. That would allow the the seam to stretch. It doesn't matter if the gathering stitches pop once the structural seam is complete. Making a casing and threading elastic through it would be an alternative to ribbing.
What a timely review. I was just thinking that flannel pajama pants would be cozy, but I can't stand the way pajama legs slide up when I slip into bed. 1/24/05 1:06 AM

I didn't want to do it either( it was also a KS!) So I did it their way on one, and my way(stretching the ribbing) on the other...guess which one came out far better? (not mine, lol) Mine was stretched out and looked bad. Lesson learned. :oP 7/26/05 8:07 PM

(and there will be a next time.) on both pairs of the pants i made, i was a little wishy-washy. i kind of half-gathered the woven and half-stretched the ribbing -- but didn't zigzag it on, darnit. next time for sure. oh! and i did *not* pre-wash the ribbing on the second pair. hoping that works out as well as it seems like it should. (i got that tip here @ pr -- *after* i'd made the first pair...) anyway. a lot of talk about a simple project. i hope this pattern's a skill-builder for me in some way! thankyou thankyou thankyou. 7/27/05 10:03 AM
