Too bad about the shrug...the good news is there are tons of shrug patterns out there. I'm sure there is one that is right for you.

Regarding being able to tell the top from the bottom, you might consider sewing a bit of ribbon onto one of the seams, or even tacking a bit of thread into a seam.
