|Pattern Description: Men's Robin Hood costume: shirt, trousers, jacket, hat. I made the shirt only for a costume for Red Riding Hood.|
Pattern Sizing: S-L. I made a medium.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes
Were the instructions easy to follow?
Well ... they should have been! There were no mistakes as such, but I thought the instructions for attaching the collar and neck facing all at the same time made the process extremely fiddly. I ripped it out and did the following, which you may find easier:
1. Prepare front facing and apply to shirt front, stitching front opening seams only.
2. Sew shoulder seams.
3. Prepare collar and sew to back of neck.
4. Place front facing over collar and sew front neck seam.
You may find it easy enough to sew the neck seam all in one go, but I preferred dealing with just the gathering at the back of the neck and keeping the collar facing free in one step, and then sewing the front collar and facing neck seam.
Instructions also say to gather the sleeve top between the small circles - I needed to gather them between the notches to fit.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
The instructions for dealing with the shirt neck! Otherwise it is fine - and I prefer putting in the sleeves before sewing the side seams, as the pattern suggests
Fabric Used: Printed cotton - a mid-weight cotton sateen.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
None, although I am not intending to put eyelets and lacing in - it doesn't seem necessary. The actor hasn't tried it on yet though ...
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
I will - because I have another 6 of these shirts to make in various sizes. I don't think I'll have a problem with those and this is likely to become my go-to shirt pattern for panto costumes.
This should have been a quick and easy make, but because of the construction suggestion, I don't feel inclined to recommend this pattern. However, once you've made one, it should be much easier making more
