Btw, I have a letter written by my great great grandmother in 1865, just after she and her family had spent 10 years in China as missionaries. She related that all she had to keep track of fashion was a 4 year old magazine. She constructed her own hoop skirt, but lacked whalebone so used bamboo as support. She wrote it looked fairly well, but clacked loudly as she walked, causing curious glances in New York!
