Pattern Description:
4 legged dog shirt sized for stretch fabric

Pattern Sizing:
small, medium, and large

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes, I made a muslin with all 4 legs and also a shortened version with just 2 front sleeves

Were the instructions easy to follow?
The instructions are pretty good and even have you do a flat sleeve insertion! I would recommend hemming the sleeves and edges before you sew the seams as the sleeves can be quite small on the lower edge

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
It's a dog shirt that actually gives good belly coversage. My dog is 11 1/2 years old and doesn't have much hair on her little tummy

Fabric Used:
fleece for the muslin (and future 4 legged version) and Ultra Cuddle for the short version

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
For my doggie, this required a ton of adjustments for fit. I'm currently making a dress for me from silk, which I didn't muslin (big mistake), but made 3 muslins for a dog shirt! I'm obviously a lunatic

My dog is a 7+ lb rescue chihuahua and does not care for Ohio winters; you'll often find her snuggled under a blanket and giving you dirty looks when asked to go outside. Her back length is shorter than the small but her neck is larger! I ended up make tons and tons of changes.

just a few of the mods:
*front sleeves had a huge amount of ease for her boney little arms and are drafted like people sleeves with a large shoulder cap, way too long too. When she would lounge, and pull her arms back, they would get caught between the sleeve and shirt body. She needed a closer fitting sleeve and underarm area to avoid this
*transition into back leg sleeves needed to be adjusted to avoid limiting her range of motion
*On the 4 legged version I actually sewed up the underbelly for about 3 1/2 inches posterior to the front sleeve to give her more belly coverage
* I made the turtleneck much more narrow

The Ultra Cuddle runs if any tension is applied so on the hemmed edges, I zigzagged some 1/4 inch elastic to the wrong side under light tension. I then flipped this to the inside and sewed through to hem. This helped to turn the hem evenly on the high nap fabric, will keep the edges from stretching too much, and the elastic will absorb any tension so the fabric doesn't run

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
Now that I have a pattern, I'll probably make a couple of versions in both 4 and 2 leg versions for her and my dog sitter's chihuahua (who is about her size).

I also made one for my mom's larger shih tzu. I used the size medium for him, but with size small armscyes and sleeves since as drafted they are so large.

***This pattern requires 3/4 yard for the smaller sizes, due to the direction of stretch, but you'll have tons of leftover fabric. With 3/4 yard I was able to make 2 small (front sleeves only) and 1 medium (front sleeves only) from that one cut of fabric. You should be able make your dog both the 4 legged and a shortened 2 legged version using the minimum recommended fabric.***

Conclusion:
Despite the dozens of shirts, sweaters, and jackets family members have bought her, she only has 2 or 3 that actually fit. It took quite a few muslins using old fleece, but she looks so cute and seems to be very warm and comfy!

Oh... my dogs have asked me to write: (the small 8 year old) I love you! I'm in Ohio too! Can we play????? PLease???? (my 16 year old): You're cute, but you aren't old enough to realize that wearing the little outfits just amuses the humans enough that hold back on the treats. DON'T AMUSE THE HUMANS if you want the good stuff.

Thanks for the review. My granddog lives in MN and is a chihuahua and I have had some success with a few patterns. He too is a rescue and about 7 lbs. I appreciate your hints to get a better fit. I just might try this pattern after the holidays. He hides under blankets most of the winter and has to be carried outside in the winter. Snow is not his friend! What a cute doggy and the love the polka dots.

I usually comment only on adult clothes but couldn't pass on this adorable photo and story. Three muslins for a dog has me laughing!!!! Your precious dog will have quite a wardrobe now that you know how to fit her. So cute!

Really cute! I had to do two muslins for my dog pet costume and couldn't believe. I'm not super easy to fit but I think the pets are harder! Great job.

So cute! I just made a coat for my little dog with the same problem: not enough hair on her tummy to keep her warm. IŽll keep this in mind for the next!
