Last Christmas, we bought my daughter a ukelele she'd her heart set on. This year, I've made her a padded gig bag to replace the cheap one the instrument came in (which quickly broke).
The customised gig bag is a great gift idea for a uke, a banjo or a smaller guitar as you can choose the exact fabric, add pockets, a handle or a shoulder strap, and even put on a zip pull as we did here: Uke Cosy BLog Post
To make the pattern, I ripped up the old vinyl gig bag and used the pieces as my pattern. Instead, you could trace around the instrument on paper, add 1-3cm of ease, make a pattern for the placket (depth) and add seam allowances the same width as the binding (if using).
The project is not as easy as I'd imagined, however, as the pieces containing the wadding (light to medium) weren't as stable as I'd hoped. Sewing the bias binding around the chunky zip wasn't plain-sailing and much seam ripping ensued.
I love the cheerfulness of the bag: it's cosy-looking, bright, cute and gives better protection for the instrument that the original bag.
Hopefully, the instrument won't be given up on anytime soon... |
So cute!

Love it! I have an assortment of ukes and it's fun to travel with them and it'd be great to have customized bags. Where'd you get the fabric?

Thanks ladies. Karen, the fabric is Michael Miller "Groovy Guitar" in colour Lime and I bought it online.
