|Pattern Description: |
A Burda kids dress and bolero. The dress has a close-fitting bodice with princess seams and top-stiching, and a gathered skirt in two length options. There are two different strap options which just means variation in where you attach the straps to the bodice.
Children's 11 through to 16. My daughter's measurements placed her at slightly smaller than the 11, so I graded down a fraction, to be equivalent to maybe a 10.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
The shape looks right. Fabric choice means it looks pretty different and it's styled a bit differently with a sash tied around the waist.
Were the instructions easy to follow?
The instructions were fine. No difficulties anywhere.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I cannot think of anything I disliked. I liked it really because it is what my daughter picked. I guess she likes the style. I liked the princess seams and the topstitching detail.
Satin from Spotlight. It's what she wanted.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
I added about 1cm to the top of the bodice all around, to cover a bit more skin (she's only 12 and I don't want her to be accused of wearing something age inappropriate). I also added about 1cm to the length of the bodice, as during fitting it was clear it wasn't quite long enough. I made a couple of test bodices to get the fit right, given I've never sewn a fitted garment for her before. It did take a little tweaking to get the fit right, but I suspect that would be the case for anyone, given children of course come in so many shapes and sizes. I made the shorter skirt, as I thought it was going to look too formal in satin in the long length. It is very short though and she'll wear it with leggings under.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
I might make it again if I get a request for another.
This is for my daughter's "graduation" from primary school. She never, never wears dresses and so I have loved getting the chance to make this for her. We could not find a thing that was suitable ready-made, and so she came around to let me make her something. I still had to promise I would not force her to wear it she didn't like it. Thankfully, it has met her standards and she'll be wearing it.
