Pattern Description:
1940s slacks, top and five-piece skirt with safari styling.
"Three piece sports outfit for Women and Misses. The jacket in two lengths, slacks, slightly flared five-piece skirt worn with lower edge of band at natural waistline."
Pattern Sizing:
My pattern is sized for a 32" bust, 27" waist, 35" hip. I resized the slacks pattern to a 39" hip.
The Fabric & Notions
1.5 metres of plain tabby weave wool suiting with a subtle tartan pattern in blue, grey and beige
The Good
The slacks are a lovely classic high-waisted style that looks subtly vintage without being obviously period. The lack of a side-seam is a clever design detail that not everyone will notice, but those who do will love.
The Bad
The lack of a side seam means that there is little room for adjustment and correction once you cut your fabric, so doing a fitting toile is absolutely essential.
The side fastening set into a dart recommended in the pattern is quite fussy and tricky.
No side seams means no pockets, unless you want to fuss with welt pockets.
Changes I made to the pattern
I omitted the cuffs because I made a cutting mistake. Rather than doing the original side-dart fastening, I set an invisible zip into the centre back seam. Not period, but worked a tread.
Changes I would recommend/do next time
I found the rise on the pattern to be quite long, so I'll shorten it slightly next time.
Anything else?
I can't wait to make the full safari-styled version of this pattern!
The Verdict:
A lovely 1940s slacks pattern, and while I adore the lack of a side seam, overall the pattern isn't my favourite high-waisted slacks pattern from this era ever.
I've blogged all about my slacks (with lots of pictures) if you want more information. |
Nice trousers. I like the high waist and wide leg shape especially. Its possible to set a pocket into a side dart by the way - I did some linen trousers like this in the summer and blogged it. Mentioning this in case you make them again and want to try a pocket without doing a welt.

Thanks Petro! I've set pockets into darts in trousers before, and into skirt with no side seams, but it would ruin the line of these trousers with how high the dart is.

Not everyone can wear this style pants, but you definitely can. AND you look wonderful wearing them! Your finishing details on the inside are so lovely. Very nice work!
