Pattern Description:
1940s pajamas or sportwear, in short or trouser length, with two top options.
'Style 1, a curved shoulder yoke releases soft fullness in front and back of pajamas top. It has a front button closing, round collar and long bishop sleeves. There is a pocket on left side. Style 2 has a lace trimmed midriff top which ties in a knot at the center front and is finished with short sleeves. Style 3 has a midriff top and short trousers.'
Style 3 can also be worn as sportswear.
I made the shorts from style 3 as sportswear/outerwear, rather than pyjamas.
Pattern Sizing:
My pattern is sized for a 32" bust, 26 1/2" waist, 35" hip. I added 2" to the total circumfrence, and the shorts fit me perfectly (I have 39" hips, so clearly the pattern is sized generously).
The Fabric & Notions
1.5 metres of vintage heavy rayon with a slight slub, 10cm zip, hooks and eyes.
The Good
The shorts are very simple, straightforward and easy to put together.
The Bad
The markings for the back pleats are unclear, and the hole marking the grainline can be read as the bottom of a dart, tricking you into making a back dart instead of a pleat (as the pattern intends). After trying the intended back pleat, I actually went with a dart instead, as it looked better - so even if you do read the pattern wrong, it's not a problem.
Changes I made for this project
None - I did the pattern pretty much exactly as it is written, with a the side slide fastener (zip) option, instead of the hook or domes to fasten.
Changes I would recommend/do next time
I might add a little more fullness to the front, so I can make the front pleats deeper.
The Verdict:
A lovely little shorts pattern, very simple, easy & comfortable. These would be a great beginners pair of shorts as long as you are comfortable reading vintage patterns.
I've blogged all about my shorts with lots of pictures if that is of interest |
