Pattern Description:
Summer dress with multiple bodice options. I made view B in this photo, then made view A shortly afterward.
Were the instructions easy to follow?
As most people found, the only tricky bit for me was the facing. I had to sew it how I thought it was meant to go before realising where I'd gone wrong and doing it properly.
I ended up taking forever but that was my fault - I cut the bodice, started putting it together, decided I didn't like where I'd cut into the pattern and started the bodice over again!
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
Personally I thought the facing was less effective than just making a full lining. The second time I made it (view A), I didn't use the facing and did a full lining instead and found it easier to manage.
Fabric Used:
A light cotton with a cotton lining. I believe this pattern looks nicer with a lighter fabric, but that tends to require a lining.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
I cut the size 14 which is what I often am with Simplicity and New Look patterns. Like others I found the bodice too big, but the facing was so complex I couldn't take in the sides. So I took it in at the zipper which makes the fit just a touch awkward.
When I followed with view A I cut it down to a 12 which I find a bit snug (if I gain a few kilos it'll be too small!).
I also made it with an invisible zipper. Seriously, if you're a beginner and don't know how to do invisible zipper, it is SO worth getting the special zipper foot and learning. It's just so much easier than a lapped zipper once you get used to it.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
I've already sewn it again with view A! So I really highly recommend it.
Conclusion:
A great beginner's summer dress with lots of bodice options. I do think this bodice is a little gappy, view A seems to fit me a bit better, but it's still a very cute dress!
