Pattern Description: Child's winter hat with optional fabric animal ears. See all the photos of my hat here.
Pattern Sizing: X-small (up to 12 months), Small, Medium, and Large (7-10 years old).
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? It looks quite similar.
Were the instructions easy to follow? Very easy. I had already worked with this pattern once before (read my first review here), so this hat went together very quickly.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I love the shape of this bonnet and the fact that it really protects little ears from the cold and wind. I also like that this pattern is available for a wide range of sizes, so I'll be able to make this hat again and again.
Fabric Used: 100% wool, lined with polar fleece.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: I left the ears off of this version and added ric-rac trim around the front edge. I also changed the hat's closure under the chin. The original pattern calls for a ribbon bow, but I find that's not very practical for babies and small children. The first time I made this hat, I added a snap under the chin, which worked well, but didn't allow for much growing room.
This time, I made little fabric tabs and attached them at the chin, sandwiched between the hat and lining fabrics. I made a little loop out of some small elastic and sewed it into the end of one of the tabs. I sewed a button onto the opposite tab for the elastic to loop over. You can see the tabs up close here: buttoned and unbuttoned. This closure has proven to be very practical (I can close it with one hand!) and I'll definitely do this again next time I make this hat.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? This is the second hat I've made and I very much doubt it will be the last. This is a great little pattern that I would definitely recommend to others.
Conclusion: What else can be said? I love this little bonnet!
