Leslie in Austin said... Another Gorgeous Thing, Ann. OK, I'm nearly sold on this pattern (I have a piece of black-brown slinky from Spandex House that wants to become this dress), but I have some questions: 1) what's the story with this dress having facings? Facings on a slinky form fitting dress seem out of place. Would it work to just bind the seams instead? 2) the hips on the pattern drawing look really curvy, wonder how this would work on a boyish figure. 2/4/05 1:37 PM

GorgeousFabrics said... Oh, Leslie, I'm glad you mentioned the slinky, because they specifically advise against it in the instructions. Here's the quote: "Although we prefer rayon knits we achieved excellent results with high quality polyester. This dress is not recommended for slinky knits." I hope that helps! -Ann 2/4/05 2:38 PM

KathleenS said... Leslie (if you see this), I've made this dress and I'd say it's best for figures with curves. Look at the various versions that have been made up on different people. I thought Deepika looked particularly stunning in hers. But judging from your photos you have mini curves (like I do myself) so I think it would be fine for you. I wouldn't recommend it for the true boyish figure.
Ann, when I saw you'd reviewed this I rushed in here to see whether you liked it and whether your expert opinion agreed with my not expert opinion. Also, whether you could offer any extra insight. I like your version although I'd love to see it on you. It's a good idea to cut it down to a top - I think that would be really nice with a neat fit. 2/4/05 5:00 PM

GorgeousFabrics said... Sewcal, you can definitely make this without a serger. I only serged the raw seam edges after sewing it up on the machine, and then I narrow-overlocked the bottom. The instructions call for sewing it using a standard machine, -Ann 2/5/05 6:56 AM

Diane E said... Ann, this is an absolutely beautiful dress. I so conveniently have this pattern in my stash! I wonder if the "no slinky" warning is due to the fabric weight, as Penelope said. When I made Christine Jonson's A-line dress in slinky, the armholes drooped down until I stabilized them with clear elastic. Could you do something like that with this dress in slinky? Who wants to experiment with a beautiful piece of slinky, though.... ;) 2/6/05 11:38 AM
