|Pattern Description: |
girl's duffle coat
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Were the instructions easy to follow?
as with all burda patterns, the directions were succinct, sometimes cryptic, but ultimately correct.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
kids coat patterns are few and far between. they seem to be either super dressy or very casual. this one i like because it walks the line between the two. the only thing i really didn't like was how the zipper is not inserted into the band seam, but merely topstitched on. had i realized this ahead of time i would have altered the front left pattern piece to fix it. since i already had the entire front of the coat sewn up, i decided to let it slide.
i used a poly-rayon-spandex blend coating fabric from joanns. it resembles wool coating, but since this is for my 8 year old daughter, i just didn't feel the need to splurge for the real deal. it is fully lined with a flannel backed satin.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
--changed the welt pockets to inset welt pockets. i thought such heavily used pockets could use the extra reinforcement.
--altered the hood lining to include a faced edge. the pattern has you cut the entire inside hood out of lining, but i don't like the lining to go straight to the edge.
--toggle buttons, the hallmark of a duffle coat, i could not find in the correct size or number. out of frustration i grabbed some 1" leather buttons and decided to work it out later. i fussed around with it a bit and came up with a loop closure.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
i think i will keep this pattern around to make again next year. there is also a boy variation that is longer and has patch pockets. this pattern gets my stamp of approval, though be wary of the directions if you're a newbie!
over all i really like this pattern. it has all those little details that give it a nice finish. as so often happens when creative solutions have to be sought, i really love the button and loop closure i came up with. i think it gives the coat a nice polish. and, most importantly, my daughter LOVES it.
