Pattern Description:
"Got your pail and shovel? Let's go! Boy's or girl's pull-on pants have front patch pockets, button-through back patch pockets, elasticized back waistband, and drawstring at front waistband. Stencil includes starfish pattern and instructions for painting with freezer-paper."

This review is for the pants only. I did not use the starfish stencil.

Pattern Sizing:
There are two size ranges: 6m-3T and 4-8. My son fits RTW size 3T and I made a 3T. It does fit slightly bigger than a RTW 3T.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes it did.

Were the instructions easy to follow?
Yes and no. I think they missed some directions when making the front patch pockets. The pockets are lined and the lining included is slightly smaller. The directions mentions that the lining pocket is slightly smaller so that when it's turned, the lining won't show. However, the directions say to pin and sew with a 1/2 seam allowance. If you just follow this, then it really makes no difference if your lining is smaller. Really, the directions should have mentioned how to line up the lining on the sides to take advantage of the slightly smaller lining.

Sewing the waistband together: It says to sew the short edges together then press in half lengthwise and then press the top edge down 1/2 inch. Make life easier and press first, then sew the short edges together! Do this especially if you're making the smaller sizes!

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
Actually, my biggest dislike is the waistband. I don't like the short elasticized back waistband, and drawstring at front waistband. At least in my case, I don't like how it looks when you tie the drawstring closed. I plan on changing it to a completely elastic waistband. Makes for easier on and off anyway.

All the seam allowances are 1/2 inch. I think the waistband would have been easier to attach with a 3/8 or 1/4 inch seam allowance. The side seams are just sewn with seam finish of your choice. It mght have been nice if they did a flat felled seam instead.

Fabric Used:
I used brown corduroy for the main pants, and quilting cotton for the waistband, the pocket linings and the facing (at least I think that's the proper term) for the bottom of the pants. The facing is not included in the pattern. I added that copying the idea from some RTW pants that we bought for him. I used the bottom of the pants pattern to make a pattern piece for the facings. These pants are too long for him, so when you roll up the pants, you have this nice cuff at the bottom. This way he can use these pants for hopefully a while!

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
I will be changing the waistband to an all elastic one. The other modification was the facings at the bottom of the pants.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
I like the overall look. Depending on how the pants fit once I change it to an all elastic waistband, I may make it again. Right now, the pants slide down somewhat and he ends up with too low of a crotch.

Conclusion:
Overall, I think this is one of the best items I've made to date! My husband couldn't stop talking about them and how he thought they looked RTW. Overall, I give the pattern a B.
