... and while in the groove, number two from a 1 meter piece of Swiss cotton, bought in Singapore a couple of years ago.
Front - the side slit helps it sit nicely
Back view
Narrow facings - with 2cm deep top-stitching
Unembellished, this is a great pattern for small lengths of special fabric or remnants (as in the first top reviewed below)
Pattern Description:
A simple sleeveless shell top adapted from Simplicity 2599 with styling and finishes from a favourite RTW top.
Pattern Sizing:
8 shaped to 10 at the hips
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
A little, but it looked more like the RTW inspiration top (in green linen on left and wearable muslin on right)
Were the instructions easy to follow?
Not used.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
The pattern is a great basic to develop a sleeveless block.
Fabric Used:
A lovely quality stretch woven viscose/poly/lycra satin crepe from The Fabric Store. This was a remnant piece so only 1m x 100cm wide, the perfect amount for this top. Chosen for its colour! I debated which side to use but in the end decided on the crepe.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
My top is adapted from Simplicity 2599 so there are quite a few changes, some style and some fit adjustments.
* Neckline lowered
* Shoulder width narrowed
* Armscye reshaped
* Drafted narrow facings for neck and armscye
* CB seam removed
* Length shortened by 2.5 cm
* Slit added on side at 110cm from bottom edge
Construction notes
Neckline and armscye stay stitched to limit stretching and seam tape used to stabilise back neck edge (shoulder seams were also stabilised with fusible seam tape)
Narrow neck facing (same on armscye)
Neck and sleeve facings stitched in place
Slit at side makes it very comfortable to wear

Side view with top-stitched side seam
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
Yes to both, I have more plans than time for this very simple shell pattern.
Conclusion:
Fabric was purchased yesterday and top was finished today, so a quick turn-around, and in time for the spell of hot weather that is on our doorstep. Simple but just right | Buy this pattern for $15.95 Add to Bag |

looks like a nicely fitted basic top and bonus that it uses so little fabric - would be good remnants of favourite fabrics.

Ditto on great shaping and tailoring. You now have a TNT pattern that is timeless and takes very little fabric.

Perfect timing for this excellent review, Sandra! I just pulled this pattern out to try again (now that I know a bit more about FBAs etc). Thanks for the detailed info on how you acheived such a beautifully finished top!

Great shell! I REALLY like the narrow facings topstitched down. I am going to use your technique in the future when facings are involved. I just finished a pj top that I stitch down the facing like this but it would be so much better if the facing was narrowed. Thanks for the idea-it's a keeper.
