| Girl's Twirl Dress
Girl's Size 6x-7
Inspiration: Several years ago I saw this dress in a store and since then, I've sewed several of this dress. Because of the stretch and the length, it fits well for 2 years. It has girl appeal because of the "swirl factor" and has "mom-appeal" because it's washable and it wears well. Of course, Kit the American Girl doll needed a matching dress.
Description: Basically this is a T-shirt pattern with tiered ruffles added as a skirt, and it's incredibly simple to make.
Fabric: For the winter season, stretch velveteen works well however a cotton or poly knit with lycra would be a great choice.
Embellishment: For this version I used my embroidery machine to add embellishment and then sewed small pearls onto the design. In the past I've also used a preformatted rhinestone and add a a ribbon flower
Instructions: Essentially, after the T-shirt top is assembled, the ruffles are added from the top down. To make this easier, I used a serger with a gathering foot although a standard gathering technique works well. The process is outlined in more detail Here.
Cautions: The biggest issue is to avoid stretching the layer of fabric to which the ruffle is being applied. If this occurs, apply a generous amount of steam (with iron 1/2"-1" from the fabric) to the back of the area which was stretched. Because of the latex, the steam will shrink the fabric back into place.
Conclusion: I'll definitely make this again as it's always a hit with my DGD. As you can imagine, a matching doll dress also delighted her.
