| Pattern Description:
This jacket is something that suits all occasions: A fitted casual jacket with hood that opens up and turns into an XXL collar.
Pattern Sizing:
36-44. I made a 36 which is the correct size based on my measurements.
If smaller sizes had existed I would have made a 34 or even a 32.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Sort of. Only I made it in pink fleece and omitted the hood.
Were the instructions easy to follow?
I ignored them except for the information on seam allowances, which are really important since the majority of seams are visible from the outside.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I like the visible seaming and the short length. I wanted a workout type jacket that was still "cute." My 8 year old said she thinks it looks like its from Lulu Lemon--I wish!
Fabric Used:
Thick Polar Fleece from Gorgeous fabrics. Its super soft and super warm. I hope it can hold up to multiple washings!!
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
So many changes. Mostly I was going for a close, more tailored fit and the original was anything but. The fleece may have had something to do with this issue, but I think the pattern is just drafted to be oversized.
1. I made it in fleece--fulled loden (boiled wool?) not being something that is either readily available or practical for my lifestyle.
2. I omitted the hood. I initially made the hood without the zipper, realized it was twice the size of my head and looked absurd up or down, and finally sacrificed it to make a facing for the collar.
3. I lined what was left of the collar with the fabric from the hood (I had to patch it together to make it work). This made it easier to insert the zipper and gave the collar some structure, which it needed (It was so floppy without the lining!!)
4. I removed an inch from both side seams and from the sleeves increasing to about 1.5 inches at the underarms. As drafted the sleeves were very roomy and the armholes way to low.
5. I removed about 3/4 of an inch from the zipper side of the center front panels and collar.
6. I skipped the pockets. I didn't have enough fabric (silly hood!).
7.Oddly the back panels ended up a couple inches longer than the front. Whether this was my mistake--with the multipattern sheets Burda uses this isn't shocking to me--or the patterns I'll never know.
8.The thing I wish I had omitted but didn't is the darts. I don't understand why a princess seamed jacket needs darts at all and they look a bit awkward in fleece. Perhaps if I was more of an hourglass and less of a pear I would feel differently....
9. Looking at the photos, I could probably still take some out of the back of the sleeve head and the back side seams--particularly near where they meet the arm hole. Back. Next time!
10. And finally, while I could hem it as per the pattern, so far I've left the edges of the sleeves and hem "raw". I'm not sure this is such a good idea for the long term--I'm a little worried it will stretch out--so if anyone has a way to finish them off so they look more professional I would love to know!
Note that I made almost all these changes AFTER I sewed the jacket but BEFORE I put in the zipper. The process was greatly simplified by the exposed seams as well as the forgiving nature of the fabric. It was actually fun to do--a nip here, a tuck there, and voila! The downside being I didn't make the same changes on the flat pattern.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
I may sew this again although since I didn't make any changes in the flat pattern it would require some work before I could do it. I would recommend it, as long as you are not afraid to alter as you go!
Conclusion:
Cute jacket that was fun to sew!

I traced this one and ended up not using it. The hood is gigundo, and I agree the darts are superfluous, and thought twice about the set in style sleeve. I ended up with an older similar style (Burda 8026) that doesn't have the princess seams but a nice slim fit. Just waiting on a zipper to finish one in boiled wool from Mood, which is the softest I have found.

Thanks do much for reviewing this - I really liked the magazine design but I don't think I'll bother with it if the fit isn't as slim as it looked in the magazine. I really love your finished garment, you did a fantastic job to not only complete this but to get a professional jacket in the end!

I love your jacket, especially the color! I liked this pattern a lot but thought a fleece might be nice in lieu of the loden. Thanks for the details and great review. I sew a lot from Burda and appreciate it!
