Pattern Description:
1880's Ladies Victorian French Vest Bodice, Bustle Overskirt, Skirt, and Bustle Pillow
Pattern Sizing:
I used a 14
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Overall yes. Though I didn't use the embellishments the pattern called for.
Were the instructions easy to follow?
Some where. I actually had more confusion with making the bustle pillow at first than I did with the rest of the outfit.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
It can fit a little more snugly than I would have liked, but I wear a full Victorian corset and petticoat under it. Since the corset gives me a more traditional shape, the more modern cut of the bodice doesn't quite mesh with it, but I have learned to lace it so that the bodice fits better. Also, it's a bit odd that the entire bodice is lined, but the sleeves aren't. I would change that if I ever used this pattern again.
Fabric Used:
The iridescent blue is a gorgeous silk my friend bought while she was stationed in Italy in the Air Force. The black is a satin backed shantung that was left over from a costume I made for another friend and she gave it to me to use as I wanted.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
The only real alteration I made to the pattern was adding a center seam down the front of the skirt, but that was because my blue fabric was only about 37" wide, and I had to get creative with the layout so that I would have enough fabric.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
I would. I really do like the skirt and bustle, though it's a bit tricky to dress yourself in it. I have reused the bustle pillow pattern a few times for others for costumes I've made.
Conclusion:
This pattern is very pretty and gives the Victorian silhouette with a slightly more modern fit. If you take your time you can end up with a very beautiful gown to feel like a lady in. I've had tons of compliments on my gown and have even won a costuming award for it. I had a lot of fun pairing up all the accessories and dressing up this pattern. I think others would have fun with this as well.
