*****edited to add the modifications that made this pattern work for me****
Removing the sleeves and shortening the skirt made a big difference to this dress. I also sorted the gaping problem by sewing on some cute buttons on the crossover.
Thanks for all your advice- now I have a dress I will wear!
Blog post about new version
Blog post about original version
Pattern Description:
Dress with deep crossover neckline, a-line skirt and butterfly sleeves
Pattern Sizing:
36-44, I made a 42
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes, although my version doesn't have the frills.
Were the instructions easy to follow?
This is Burda, so fine (and sometimes funny) if you have some experience.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I like everything about the pattern, I am just not so thrilled with my version, which is mainly because of fabric weight and a bit because of a gaping neckline (which I am not subjecting you to in the photos. You're welcome).
Fabric Used:
Cotton, quilting/crafting weight. Not appropriate for this style, specially the sleeves. Yes, I know I shouldn't've, but the colours and pattern made me do it!
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
I lengthened the skirt by about 10 cm. A line skirts tend to look better on me longer rather than knee length. I might shorten it back though.
I made my normal swayback adjustment.
I didn't add the frill to the neckline or hem. Using my coordinating stripe fabric on the neckline made the dress look a bit too much like pajamas. I don't mind it so much on the hem as a bias strip.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
This was supposed to be a trial for another more appropriate fabric. I'm on the fence about another version. The nechkline is low and gapes a bit. I need to fix this up before I made another one. I blogged about this project and have had lots of excellent advice on what to do to fix the issues. So perhaps I will make another improved version...
Conclusion:
Lovely pattern for a summer dress. Needs a bit more modification to work for me.

Crossover V necklines are apt to gap...how about a row of buttons? The sleeves could be gathered or darted at the hem... maybe? Still its cute and retro.

How about a modesty panel, or wear with a camisole? I made a very similar BS dress, with crossover neckline and wore it more with a camisole. Actually it was made of the same gorgeous butterfly fabric that you made a dress out of for your daughter

good idea yummymummy. And thanks for reminding me about that butterfly fabric. I still have some of that left in the stash

You must have picked the very best of photos because I can't see a thing wrong with it! It looks lovely and cool and comfortable.

With the crossover neck, one can often adjust the amount of the cross, or the pitch/angle for better coverage and preventing gaping (although it can lead to alot of basting and ripping). Good luck! and this dress is very summery and comfortable looking also.

I actually like both versions. I also like your pretty sandals.

I think it looks great!

I think the shorter length and removing the sleeves made a world of difference. Cute detail with the buttons too

I'm glad you were able to save the dress since the fabric is so lovely. Very nice!
