Pattern Description:
A stained glass patchwork bag from Patchwork Mariko which is also available as a kit. Pattern Sizing:
Completed bag is 40 x 30cm. Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
The finished bag was as shown on the pattern aside from the differing fabrics used. Were the instructions easy to follow?
The instructions are very detailed, it's obviously written by someone whose first language is not English but as I can't utter a word of Japanese, I can hardly quibble with them. What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
The preparation is a bit fiddly with lots of small pieces of fabric to be cut out. No seam allowance is given and it's important to remember that allowances on the outer edge need to be larger. I copied the templates on to some thin interfacing and numbered each one and noted the seam allowance required which helped no end. I like the fact that the finished product is just delightful and is much admired wherever I go with it. Fabric Used:
The fabric used is 100% cotton either made in Japan or of an oriental style. The lining I used was also 100% cotton. An iron-on fusible batting is used and a calico interfacing. Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
The original pattern calls for the use of purchased handles but I made my own using some black linen interfaced with a stiff material from my stash. I also added an inner pocket and a magnetic closure. I only used 6 different oriental fabrics instead of the 7 recommended in the pattern. Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
I certainly would sew it again and indeed this is the 3rd time I have made this bag. The first one was from a complete kit supplied by the company. You can see the process involved in making this bag on my blog http://newaussiecath.blogspot.com.au/2013_02_01_archive.html Conclusion:
This is a very pretty and eyecatching summer bag which I enjoyed making very much.
