Competition pose
I originally saw this dress on this blog.
Here is the link to the original on the JCrew website.
I loved that it was on the smarter end of a casual summer dress.
I used Butterick 4389 for the bodice and Burda 2010-03-107 for the skirt.
Butterick 4389 has become my TNT pattern for a strapless princess seam bodice. I always thought that I couldn't wear strapless dresses due to my small bust, but the discovery of boning has shone some light on my misconceptions. Now I wear them all the time!
I've made a small bust adjustment to the side front piece - flattening the bust curve and taking in the side seam by 1cm, blending down to waist line.
Burda 2010-03-107 was a lovely make for me last year. As soon as I saw this JCrew dress, I knew I could use this front skirt piece to mimic the front pleats. However, I changed the skirt shape to be more a-line.
I double-checked that the skirt and bodice pieces matched up - which they luckily did - before sewing them together.
I also decided that I wanted this to be have a more casual feel, so instead of a zipper, I shirred the bodice back. To do this I cut the bodice back piece on the fold, but with 10cm "seam allowance". The shirring is 3cm apart.
I shirred the fashion fabric and lining pieces. The top allowance has thin normal elastic added for extra security.
Since the bodice back is shirred, I needed to create an allowance for the extra fabric in the skirt back too - so once again, I cut the back piece on the fold with a 10cm "seam allowance".

I added boning to the side seams, which helps the dress stay up.
Conclusion
I really love this dress. It came out so close to my original vision, which is such a cool feeling.
I especially love how the fabric is shown off so nicely.
Really happy with this one! |

It really is a beautiful dress and you made the shirring modifcations work for the style. The boning along with the shirring probably work together for a very secure bodice. Fabric is so summery!
