Pattern Description: A close fitting, above mid knee pullover dress with either above elbow sleeves or sleeveless. Both styles have front and back darts and outside stitched tucks.
Pattern Sizing:6-12. I sewed size 12. The pattern is described as above mid knee, I am only 5ft 2" and normally shorten dresses but I left this as the pattern and it is OK but for anyone taller who doesn't like their dresses too short, they might be advised to add extra before starting. It could always be cut off later!
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes, there aren't really many style modifications which could be done. Further pictures Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes the instructions were quite straightforward. All the pattern pieces were cut out on a single thickness. I used my new rotary cutter for this and found it worked well on the jersey fabric. Before removing the pattern pieces I used dressmakers carbon paper and a tracing wheel to mark the darts and tucks. As my material was navy the yellow marks showed up really well. This worked very well for the darts but I realised when It came to the tucks, these were sewn from the right side and my marks were on the wrong side. Fortunately the slight indentations from the tracing wheel showed through and I was able to fold the tucks on the line quickly and easily. (I could have quickly tacked the length of the lines but this wasn't neccessary.
It is essential to match up the tucks at the side seams. I pinned them but when I tacked them found they had moved and had to redo them. Because the tucks go in different directions they must be pinned/tacked exactly on the seamline.
It is a bit difficult to work out which is the back and front when trying on the dress without checking where the darts in the bodice are. Worth putting a label in the back neck facing.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? It was the simple but effective design feature of the tucks which attracted me to this pattern. The darts hidden behind the tucks helped to give the dress a good shape as did the join of the tops to bottoms disguised under the tuck at the waist. The front and back neck facings were sewn into the sleeve seam at the shoulders and this helps give the neck line a nice firm shape.
Fabric Used:I used a navy cotton jersey. Whilst this worked well, in rertrospect I wish I had used a better quality fabric.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: No pattern alterations were made. I do note however that on some reviewers photos the tucks look rather larger than mine and show up more effectively. Perhaps they are not quite so noticeable on dark fabric.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? Yes if I could find some suitable quality fabric in a lighter colour I would probably make it again. I would recomemend it to others, it is easier to make than the design suggets.
Conclusion: This is a really good pattern for a figure hugging dress which looks more compicated than it actually is.
