Simpclity 1873 is described as "Misses'/miss petite dress in two lengths and loose fitting cape jacket". I opted for the A style, which is the longer length dress with sleeves.
Pattern Sizing
Even though I'm a bit of a pear-shape, and would normally need to grade out the pattern to two sizes larger at the hips, the skirt is wide enough that I didn't have to do that. So for this pattern, I used the size 14 pattern all the way around and it fit perfectly. Was a tad concerned I might need to raise the waist (since there's a 3/4" discrepancy between my back waist length and the pattern's), but it was fine.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yep!
Were the instructions easy to follow?
Yep, although I didn't pay too close attention to them. It seemed like the zipper insertion instructions were pretty detailed enough that a newbie would be able to follow them easily.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
As time consuming as they are, I honestly like the darts and the pleats. It gives such a cool structure to the dress. I miss pockets though I guess I could have added my own if I really wanted them.
Fabric Used
Acetate/Viscose crepe. Holds the shape of the darts and pleats really nice.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made
Just added my standard three inches in length to the skirt.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
Would love to sew this again, maybe with a lighter fabric. I adore the sleeves on this dress! And definitely recommend it to others!
Conclusion
As usual, Cynthia Rowley and Simplicity put out a real solid dress pattern. Love it!
