Pattern Description: Three Disney princess costumes for ages 3-8: Ariel, Snowhite and Cinderella. The basic dresses have a voluminous skirt and a bodice with the characteristic point at the waist and the piping dividing the centre front. Then there are the add-ons: Snowhite has the large collar which attaches with press studs after the dress has been zipped up. Cinders has a peplum which is puffed up with removable pads.

I made a simplified version of the Cinders dress but in the past I have made the real thing as well as Snowhite.

Pattern Sizing: For skinnies, go down a size (or two) as this is big in the tummy. I had to give both the bodice and the skirt some extra length to size 8.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? On previous occasions it did (see the last picture on blog post for Snowhite). This time, I wanted to get away from the Disney look and aim for a more general period costume that my daughter could wear to the "dress up as a Tudor day" at her school. See pics of our regal Tudor photoshoot!

On future dress-up occasions, we might add on bits of braiding to the dress or make a matching coif or any suggestions that you may have for how to get some extra mileage out of this one!!

Alterations 4 in all, not including that I chose different colours:

1. I raised the bodice front by 3cm which I highly recommend . If you look at the Snowhite costume on my blog post (my first attempt at this costume, years ago), you'll notice that a shirt had to be worn underneath! This bodice is cut yuckily low!

2. Narrowed the skirt by some 20% as I didn't have enough fabric. I think this creates a better look for a tall 8 year old: more princess and less shepherdess!

3. Added a pattern piece to the puff sleeves to create what is technically known (I think) as Juliet Sleeves! (Hm, maybe she can wear this to "Shakespeare day" if ever there is one!)

4. I removed the peplum.

Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes, though being less of a beginner, I wanted to do my own thing, e.g. I sewed the lining separately, just before adding the sleeves, so that the side seams don't show inside. This added a good hour to the job as I had to hand sew the lining to the zip and waist, but it looks lovely.

Fabric Used: Satin. Not a fabric I ever wear as I don't like the slippery coldness of it but daughter loves it and insisted. I'd loved to have used crushed velvet though!

Would you recommend this pattern? Absolutely! I don't know how it compares to other Princess Costume patterns but the results are more lovely than had we bought the costumes at a Disney Store (and weren't difficult to make back in the days of being a self-taught beginner). The designs are better for being simpler, the fabrics lovelier in colour and sheen and it makes the shop-bought costumes look so fussy and gaudy in comparison. IMHO anyway!

A word of warning for Snowhite: you'll need a lot of stiffener/firm fabric to make the collar stand up. My collar was a fail but since it's removable, my daughter preferred to leave it off on the numerous occasions she wore the dress (and it didn't look any less like a Snowhite for that!)
