I am a Middle Eastern dancer and I know how expensive our costumes are, and why they are so expensive. Being that I seem to have a body shape that most manufacturers don't cater to I thought I would take on the challenge of making something on my own.
Size made: 8
First off I did not make the top, vest or veil for this pattern because honestly I saw them as flimsy and useless. I just had visions of shimmying and a boob popping out of the side when I looked at the pattern! Ew! No stability and it would take a lot of altering to pass it off as even semi-decent for a public performance. It's better off as a swim suit top or for a cheap Halloween costume.
Despite my ill feelings towards the pattern, I had already made a bra-top and I did not feel like drafting a belt pattern. While I like the shape, it still isn't right. There are no darts to make it fit correctly. Also, the pattern says to use snaps to close the belt. . .WHAT A HORRIBLE IDEA! NO WAY that would survive a performance! After modifying the pattern for the belt a few times and still not being happy I was out of options and fabric. So I took some grommets and made a lace up closure so that I can adjust how loose or snug I want it to be in different spots on the hips.
Just doing the beading on the belt probably took me 2days worth of work if I where to put it back to back. I didn't do anything crazy or fancy either. I just wanted a basic black costume with nothing crazy.
I also made the skirt (view A I believe). I made a peachskin skirt for practice and a chiffon one for performances. I am 50/50 on the skirt. For how much fabric is used you really need a wider elastic. I did make that change as well as making the slit on the skirt a bit higher. It looks lovely in action!
In short: throw away the tops. the skirt is good with some mods. the veil is your call. For me it's not the right size.
I'll try to get pictures later!! |
