| Pattern Description:
Fitted, above mid-knee length dress has front pleated at back dropped shoulder, crossed fronts forming drape effect, lined skirt and topstitched seams.
Pattern Sizing:
AAX(4-6-8-10), DD(12-14-16-18)
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Pretty much (I like my fabric better)
Were the instructions easy to follow?
Not at all. There is one main pattern piece, which they confusingly refer to as 'front and back' - makes it sound like two pieces when it is just one! The double notches on the back don't match up at all, which makes it hard.
Then to compound all of this, you really can't see the shape of the dress until you finish the very last step. I recommend stopping after each step, and pinning it on your dressform/yourself to check that you are on track.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
Loathed the instructions and the less-than-stellar pattern markings (plus, there were SO MANY of them!). It would also be very difficult to alter this pattern.
I do like the style and shape - I think it would suit many people. And I like that it is economical on fabric use (less than 2m), and has no closures.
Fabric Used:
A very drapey/light polyester crepe knit. I wouldn't recommend a heavier knit (such as ponte, or even many cotton-lycras) - this would probably add more bulk than most people want on their bellies!
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
I graded from a 14 to a 16 at where I *think* the waist is - but I'm still not sure...
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
I might sew it again. But I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, really. Buy a different Donna Karan dress - the current Vogue release has a lovely new stretch dress with ruching, and it's bound to have better instructions (I hope)!
Conclusion:
Bad instructions, good end result. |

I have this pattern and did a mock-up 2 years ago. It looked like a baggy greek toga. Yours looks awesome. Maybe I'll try again in a smaller size. Thanks for the review!
