I never realized how difficult it is to find a tank top for a toddler which doesn't cost $20! In New England winters, I like to layer my little one. So when I spotted this pattern, I decided to give it a shot. So last evening with an hour to spare, I made this tank. And guess what? I still had more scraps so I made another one. I was about to make yet another but I finally ran out of this fabric
Now, I've finally found a use for my knit scraps and she looks happy in her new tank! In summer she can just run around in this and still look cute.
Pattern Description: A Free Tank Top Pattern for Toddlers from Ottobre (Thank you!)
Pattern Sizing: 80 - 122cm. I made the smallest size (80) for my 2 year old and the fit is perfect for her.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes!
Were the instructions easy to follow? To be honest I didn't even look at them. The construction is super simple. I followed this order.
1. Sew one shoulder,
2. Bind the neck.
3. Sew the 2nd shoulder
4. Bind the armholes
5. Sew Side Seams
6. Hem!
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? It's such a useful pattern to have and free to boot!
Fabric Used: I used left over cotton lycra from this project.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: I didn't use the binding pattern. I always measure and make my own based on the stretch of the fabric. Next time I will lower the back neck. It's too high for her.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? I will totally sew this again and again! In my next version I will add gather to the front to make it a little more girly.
Conclusion: Make this today! And I promise you'll keep going.

VivianZ said... I love this FREE top! I am a first time GM, so love to make clothes for my GD. How big of a seam allowance did you use as it doesn't say on the pattern. I don't have a child to try it on, so you made the smallest, but what size does she wear normally? This is so I can compare. These are so cute, and I do have scraps to use. Thanks for the review! 3/8/13 7:50 AM

Deepika said... Vivian, I added 3/8" seam allowance. My daughter is 2 but she wears 18-24 months clothes. And this tank is snug on her. But I wanted it that way because I am using this as an undershirt. I think you may want to go up a size. Hope this helps. Here's a link to Ottobre Size Chart. 3/8/13 5:41 PM
