| Pattern Description: This is a loose-fitting top with a collar, buttons up in the front, has gathered sleeves, tucks between the bust and waist line, with a shaped hemline.
Pattern Sizing:The pattern comes with sizes 6 through 22 all in one pattern. Way too many lines when your cutting out the pattern.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?I think it looks a lot like the photo on the front. I think my sleeves have more pouf then they show on the photo. I did not exactly want such poof but I don't mind it.
Were the instructions easy to follow?I am not sure all the instructions were easy, but after reading them, sleeping on it and rereading I finally got it.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I really like the hemline. I wanted a top that was longer but not tunic length with a shirt tail hemline. (Not sure if thats the term for the hemline). The sleeves came out a big bigger in the gathered part then I wanted, but not a deal breaker.
I didn't like the instructions for the front self facing. I read it like a gazillion times, without even coming close to understanding it. This pattern says "See & Sew" right? Next I took the tissue pattern piece, folded it on all the lines trying to figure out what its suppose to look it. I figured if I can find out what it should look like maybe I can sew it some what close. NOPE, didn't get it. I started thinking this is going to be a "wadder" (trashed). So I slept on it and by the middle of the next day "BOOM" ohhh, I get it. I rushed back to the sewing machine and sewed that part up before I forget it again. Fabric Used:
I used quilting fabric. I do like the weight of this fabric and I picked the fabric from the "specialty" quilt fabric section from JoAnn Fabrics. Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:I didn't really make many changes to the pattern. I wanted this to be my fitted blouse for the contest. So I took the tucks in maybe a 1/4 inch, there are 4 of them so thats about an inch. I started with a size 12 and past the waist I cut it to a 14. I could probably take the waist in another 1/2 inch on either side for the contest but I really don't want to mess with it. I like the top now, I don't want to ruin it. I just don't trust my sewing skills enough.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? I do have plans to sew it again. I bought another fabric at the same time. I figured if I get this pattern down, I should sew two blouses. My wardrobe is all tee-shirts from Old Navy. I want to expand it at least a little. But I do want to reduce the pouf a bit.
Conclusion:
I found this top to be a bit more challenging then I assumed in the store. I finally got my top with a peter-pan collar (or something close). I learned tucks can be a great asset to shape a blouse and they are simple to do. They can create a nice waistline without being too fussy. Thanks to this contest, I actually made a button down blouse with sleeves, a collar and is fitted from the bust through the waist! (And I'm happy to have a new item in my closet, button down blouse. Who would have thunk it!)
Ok, I got my photographer to take a few pics (17 teen year old daughter with major attitude). She snapped off two pics and put the camera down and said you do it. I hope these pics are better. I think I may have a little issue with the back, but I don't know how to fix them. If anyone would like to put their 2 cents in, I would appreciate it. Photo here

I think maybe swayback issues? Short waist? Narrow shoulders? Maybe all three.
At any rate, I just love this shirt.

Good work on the multi tasking - painting and sewing. I like your top, especially those open darts, tucks or whatever they are called. Nice colour too - Good job. I see what you mean about the pouffy sleeves - they look nice though.

It's a nice blouse (I love the colour)and beautiful on you and you've met all the issues of this contest.

Thank you ChristmasHills, and Quickie. The pattern just said make the tucks, I'm not sure if that is the the correct term for them or not.

Nice blouse, BlueSkysAhead. Looks like good, even spacing on the buttons/buttonholes. I think a quilting cotton would exaggerate the pouffiness of the sleeves whereas something drapier would look more like the photo. It is a nice blouse and I can see why you are glad to add it to your wardrobe. (And if those lines for 6-22 are all on the same pattern pieces, yep, that's a lot of lines!)

Renren, thank you for the information. Maybe I will try a lighter weight cotton with this pattern. I just pulled the pattern and YES all the sizes are together.

Hi, I think your top is quite fitted enough for this contest - I quite understand how you feel about not wanting to change it in case you ruin it. Its lovely.

Nice blouse. I actually like the sleeves - they're a detail that's a bit different from the standard shirt, as is the collar and the tucks rather than darts. I think it's quite fitted enough. Is there any chance someone else could take some photos for you, so that you can properly show off the fit (and the back too) for the contest? It's a bit unfair to you that there are wrinkles from holding the camera up. (I agree with Renren that a lighter weight fabric would probably lie flatter in the sleeves).

Sara Liz, thank you for your comments. KathleenS I thought about trying to get better photos. I will see if I can get some. And thank you both.

Thanks for the extra photos. I think maybe the tucks need to extend further up at the back. It looks like you have a lot of extra fabric in that area. But I'm used to fitting with darts, and I expect it's a bit different (and I'm not an expert anyway).

thanks KathleenS. I thought that while I was making it. Then when I was finished I had thought the sleeves took the extra fabric away. From the pictures it appears there is still some extra fabric.

Cute blouse. It's the fit that makes it work.

Love your blouse. It does look like the top of the sleeve is too far away from the tip of your shoulder. Could you do a slight re-work on the length of your shoulder out to the very top of your shoulder? I would measure from the neckline (where a chain might lay against your neck) out to the tip of your shoulder where the joint is. Also use a softer cotton. Other than that your bouse is very nice.

Thank you for the comments velosewer and Bobbie Giam. I think I understand what you are saying Bobbie Giam, there is too much fabric between the collar and the sleeve? I will try that next time I use this pattern. Thanks for the help!

I get the same kind of fit and instructions issues with Butterick patterns that you write about in your review. Vintage or current patterns-doesn't matter, so I'm not sure what the problem is. It took me forever to do the front facing on B5678, for example, and although I measured and cut carefully, and fitted as I sewed it still fits a lot looser than the pattern illustration. I tend to go with Simplicity and Vogue patterns now because they don't take a lot of alteration to get a great fit, and the instructions are a lot easier to follow. Still, even with the fitting issues you cite, your blouse looks great on you:)
