Pattern Description: Zip-front weekend jacket with a secret hood hidden inside the wide collar! Flattering raglan sleeves are comfortable and easy-to-sew, and the elastic waistline creates a slim, curve-hugging silhouette.
Pattern Sizing:
I made a size 12, but made a little extra room at the elbows and added a godet in the center back for extra hip room
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Almost! I made a lot of modifications, but the underlying structure is the same.
Were the instructions easy to follow?
Yes! Between the printed pattern instructions and Tasia's sew-along online, you can't go wrong.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I love that it is designed for pear shaped ladies like me. I love the hood (a generous size which will actually shield your face from the weather, unlike some skimpy hoods). Some people complained about sleeve length, but it was just right for me. Also, if you are making this as a raincoat and intend to be active in it, I think longer sleeves are appropriate - you need the extra length/room for mobility. I like the elastic waist. I think it does need some sort of pockets on the exterior, so I added side seam pockets.
Fabric Used:
Wool coating for the exterior. Cotton flannel for the lining. And bemberg rayon to line the sleeves (underlined in flannel).
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
Oh boy, I made a lot. I made the hood detachable. I made the collar shorter in front. I made overlapping plackets in front to cover the zipper. I omitted the elastic from the cuffs. I added extra room at the elbows. I raised the waist elastic about 1/2 inch. I added side seam pockets. I added toggles. More details on my blog: http://errantpear.blogspot.com/2013/03/finished-minoru.html Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
I think I will definitely sew this jacket again, but I will stick more to the intended style instead of trying to make this pattern into something else. I made a lot of changes but this jacket doesn't really need them (unless you're trying to make a hybrid Minoru-dufffle coat like me!) It is an excellent pattern on its own.
Conclusion:
Like it a lot! Any dislikes are a result of my own alterations. |

Great jacket. The added placket is a good idea. I sympathise about the difficulty sewing on the toggle patches. I had trouble with that too although mine was even worse because it was a coat for a 2 year old!

your jacket looks really great! I think you need to change your sewing level to a much higher grade!

Love your jacket, I think the placket is a great idea.

I may have to use your placket idea when I finally make this jacket. Love the toggles, your jacket looks great!

Your Minoru is darling in all ways. I love your detachable hood. Great job!

Thanks everybody! I think you might be right Tess - I'll update my sewing level. And I can't imagine doing toggles like this for a 2 year old's jacket, Kathleen. That sounds like a serious challenge!

I'm so glad to see you review this and show your duffle modifications. Two years back I bought a Lands End duffle coat made in polarfleece. It's my favorite jacket but it's pilling so I no longer wear it "for good". You've given me the idea to try this pattern and make a new one. Thanks.
