Pattern Description:
Nicola features feminine floral detailing throughout with a tulip skirt and petal sleeves. The wrap dress secures with buttons, which allows for pairing with your favorite belt. Make this dress out of a solid fabric or mix contrasting fabrics together. A second style option includes a waist length wrap blouse with a sash closure that ties into a bow.
Pattern Sizing:
2-16. I made a size 6 and it generally fit.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes.
Were the instructions easy to follow?
Yes, instructions were really easy to follow. Usually I'm pretty decent at inserting sleeves but these sleeves were really tough for some reason.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I really like that at first glance it is a simple wrap dress but when you look closer you see all the flower detailing in the sleeves and the skirt. I really love the sleeves...they're there to cover you up but are still loose and offer a little sneak peak Plus they're easy to move in.
Fabric Used:
Anna Maria Horner Rayon Challis
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
I really should have made a muslin but given that my measurements are pretty 'standard' I don't usually have to make any alterations. And I'm a little lazy sometimes. So I didn't make any changes but here are my recommendations for what to keep an eye on:
The bodice dress ended up fitting alright in the end (after I added snaps to keep the top crossed) but I thought it was a goner for most of the construction stages. The pleats are really nice but they are designed for a certain size bust and circumference and may need alterations. At first the v-neck gaped a ton but after I added sew-on snaps to keep the dress tight it fit a bit better. And I wear the dress with a tight belt also.
I would recommend lining the entire top. The facing of the front kept trying to come out so I used some stitch-witchery to keep it down (which worked well) but isn't the most elegant
Also beware that the overlap of the two sides of the skirt is minimal...and can accidentally flap open if you're not careful.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
Despite all the critiques above, I do really like my dress and have gotten a ton of compliments on it. I really like that it is unique and versatile. I might sew it again in just the top with the ties (view c). I think it is a very cute little pattern. Would recommend it with a muslin beforehand.
