I have had dye problems, and also have had off-grain fabric purchases at Joann's and should have stopped buying fabric there long before I actually did stop. My final straw was last summer when I wanted to buy some terry cloth for a beach jacket. The fabric looked great on the bolt. And I had considered buying it for months, waiting for a 50% off sale. It was thick 100% cotton terry, not cheap - $12.98 a yard. When I got a coupon for half off, I was ready to buy. Took it to the cutting table, the cutter rolled it out and lo and behold there was a 1/2 inch run throughout the bolt. Revolting! Now, I enter Joann's with blinders on for any garment-fabric purchases. The upholstery fabric may be okay, but I don't know that I'd risk that either. 2/26/05 9:11 AM

One suggestion, have you tried Synthrapol? I keep a bottle handy. I bought some clearance fabric at Hancock's a while back to make napkins. Nice indigo linen type. The clerk warned me about the dye ruboff. I brought it home and used the Synthrapol to hand wash the fabric until the water ran clear. I believe it's formulated to remove unreacted dye. I haven't made the napkins yet so can't tell how well they'll work (stash aging), but the water did eventually run clear. 2/26/05 11:33 AM

Anyway, I washed it 3 - 4 times in hot water with several dye trapping sheets (Shout and Woolite both make them), and eventually it cleared up. By the way, the shirt looks fantastic! 2/27/05 4:44 PM
