Preamble: Are you in the mood to be a commoner for a day? You're going to need the right clothes. A stylish and swingy circle skirt would be just the thing. The full skirt makes climbing out of windows quick and easy. And you'll be cool all day as you run amok amongst the hoi polloi. And look great, too, because you never who you'll meet with a camera. Like say, a Really Handsome Newsman.
Pattern Description: Serendipity Skirt inspired by Audrey Hepburn's wardrobe in the movie Roman Holiday, as designed by Edith Head. Four panel unlined circle skirt with in-seam pockets, invisible zipper, bias faced hem and self belt. The original from the movie was in a camel color.
Pattern Sizing: M
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? It does!
Were the instructions easy to follow? Photo instructions are online at The Heroine's Closet.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? Pockets! And near any fabric type can be used - heavier weights in the winter, lighter weights in the summer.
Fabric Used: I made mine in muslin first to double-check the length and waist. I still haven't decided on my fashion fabric yet - I'm thinking a camel bottom weight. Hancock fabrics has some perfect 60" wide suit/bottomweights, so probably that. But I haven't yet had a chance to drive up there. Hope I can before summer gets too far gone!
I found an old self belt kit and buckle from Nor-Mar Fabrics in Napa (have you been? Oh, you GOTTA go!) in their 25 basket. However, it took me 6 hours to make the belt. You read that right - 6 hours. There's a reason that stuff was marked down - it had outlived it's useful life. I think the really sad part is it took me 6 hours to realize that.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: I used an invisible zipper and inserted a zipper guard along the side seam up through the waistband. I chose a bias faced hem because it's so classy on skirts like this. It provides just enough extra weight to the hem, especially if your fabric is lightweight. The hem then moves so beautifully when you walk and then there's this little "peek" of color if you've used a contrast hem fabric. You're gonna get noticed in this skirt!
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? I highly recommend this pattern. Every girl needs a circle skirt in her closet.
Conclusion: You're going to love this pattern. It's so fun to twirl about in. Great and cool for summer.
Pattern Notes & Skill Level: This pattern is a DRAFT Work-In-Progress, size Medium on a 5'4" model, 30" waist. Skirt hem length is based upon your desired finished length but the pattern was drafted at a 30" finished hem length from the natural waist. Skill level assumes intermediate sewing construction knowledge, a side seam invisible zipper with guard and a bias faced hem. Pattern layout included, grain lines are marked on the pattern. Instructions are posted on THE HEROINE'S CLOSET
A note about the designer and our Heroine: One felt the other was too skinny with a too long neck. So the first one barked out some orders to the work room staff to draft up blousy, gathered, pleated things requiring neck scarves etc., etc., etc. ad nauseum in a vain attempt to balance things out. The other felt differently and let it be ever so diplomatically known. Obviously, our Heroine already had an inkling of what was to come in her years ahead fashion wise. Know thyself and you'll always be well dressed.
Enjoy!

I loved the movie, loved Rome in the fall and think your skirt is all kinds of fun. It will be fun to see it made up in fashion fabric and modeled.
