Good on you for persevering as it is easy to get discouraged when you are beginning and the pattern seems less than helpful. I still buy patterns on sale when I have unsewn ones - so you are not alone on that. And I still choose designs which I hope will suit me and they don't. You may turn out to be a quicker learner than I. I hope so. Having said all that I like the dress on you, especially with the belt but if you aren't comfortable then you won't feel happy when wearing it.

Yes, it can take practice to see past the attractive illustration on the envelope to what it would look like on you, or what you like wearing. You're going about it the right way by comparing with things you know you like. The pattern should say on the envelope how much interfacing you need - that's a legitimate complaint! It does on the Butterick website - see the fabric requirements section (FUSIBLE INTERFACING A, B, C). Are you sure it isn't on the envelope as well?
