Pattern Description: This is a circa 1997 Burda pants and shorts pattern. Slightly tapered pants (loose through thigh) with 2 versions: cargo pockets, or draw string at leg hem. Shorts with flared legs and cargo pockets. All have faced waistband with angled front pockets, fly zipper, belt loops.
Pattern Sizing: 36-44. I cut a 38 and added about 1/4 to the back inseam for my curvy butt.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes.
Were the instructions easy to follow? The instructions are detailed with good diagrams. The fly zipper construction has many steps. I needed to read them carefully and look at the diagrams and compare to similar ready made shorts to figure out each step - fly zippers are not intuitive for me yet. The zipper has a fly shield and separate facing. The instructions don't mention to finish the edges of the fly facing but it needs to be done.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? This is the third make of this pattern. I like the faced waistband and deep pockets. All versions are cottage/weekend wear.
Fabric Used: medium weight 100% cotton denim in the stash for about 10 years; waistband facing and fly made from remnant of woven stripe cotton; pocket piece and extension from remnant of printed cotton poplin. The denim was washed and dried three times so hopefully most of the shrinkage and excess dye release happened.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: I used the pants pattern to make shorts. I compared the leg width (22 inches) and inseam length (6 inches) of similar RTW shorts to decide on my adjustments: I added 3/8 inch to the out seams starting at the hem, tapering to zero at the hip. I only put one buttonon instead of two on the waistband.
I added an extension to the pocket piece so it would reach the centre front- with the extension, angled pockets stay smooth and won't bunch up towards the side seams. I used a jean zipper and had to shorten it to the right length.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? The pattern is staying in my stash for good reason- it fits VERY well. It's a very well drafted pattern. If you find it somewhere get it!
