The ruching didn't work for me either so I omitted this and wear the front plain.

I just finished this pattern today and was equally underwhelmed. The ruching did not work for me either. I think the neckline is also too wide and I re-did the neckbinding several times, each time cutting off another 1". Your fabric is lovely. and maybe if the neckline was tightened it would appeal to you.

I think the fit looks like the picture on the envelope. The neckline looks like it might have stretched out a little but wearable. Why don't you try this pattern with a fabric containing lycra? I am sure you would probably be happy with the fit then.

I like it, I love the argyle styling. I hope you get some wear out of it. Maybe wash it and see if it shrinks ;-)?
