|Pattern Description: |
Girls' lined vest with princess seams, double-breasted button closure, and laced back.
It's slightly cropped.
110-152 cm. I made a size 134 height/128 width. It is fitted, but the width can be adjusted after sewing by how you tie the laces in the back and by button placement, if necessary.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Were the instructions easy to follow?
Yes, but you need to follow them carefully, as a lined vest is one of trickier things to do in terms of order of construction.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
The pattern in the magazine didn't appeal to me at all. It's not something my girls would wear anyway.
But, when I decided to make my daughter a hobbit costume, I was flipping through my Ottobre magazines for patterns that could work and, lo and behold, here was the perfect vest pattern!
The vest is very cute for what it is and has some very nice details.
I like the shaping (well, it's more like design lines in this small size) of the princess seams.
I thought how the lacing was done was interesting: Two flaps are sewn into the princess-style seams in the back. Rivets are then put into those flaps to string the laces through. I suppose it's easier to insert rivets into flap pieces than into the full garment pieces (especially since the flap is doubled fabric plus interfacing, allowing you to avoid all that bulk in the bodice fabric.)
Detail photos and photos of the rest of the hobbit costume.
Upholstery fabric (not the world's best garment fabric, of course, but I love using upholstery for costumes, because of the very wide width and the fabulous print choices).
Satin for the lining.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
The pattern calls for 8 buttons (one column of buttons is working, the other is faux). I didn't have 8 matching buttons and was in a time crunch, so I used 4. The vest likes to swing open at the bottom because of this.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
No, not unless I was going to sew another costume like this. But I recommend it.
