|Pattern Description: From the magazine: Memorable party dress is embellished with smocking and accented with beads. Created from silk dupioni with a skirt overlay. The dress features a piped square neckline and smocked front insert. The puffed sleeves have beaded bands trimmed with piping. A pleated cummerbund finishes the front, while the dress closes at the back with an invisible zip and long sashes.|
Pattern Sizing:6, 7, and 8 years
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes, except I changed the beads and added more.
Were the instructions easy to follow?Yes
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I really like the neckline. My daughter specifically said she did not want a collar. After searching all of the AS&E magazines we found this one. I also liked the fact that the smocking was a simple insert and therefore it went rather quickly.
Fabric Used:Silk dupioni with a silk organza overlay.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:The pattern called for an overlay of tulle, but I really like using silk organza.
I added a silk organza sleeve support so the puff wouldn't cave in and the sleeves stayed puffy.
I bound the edge of the organza with wide bias strips of dupioni so it would hide the shadow of the hem on the dupioni underskirt.
I followed the smocking pattern, but instead of beading alternate cables, I beaded every one; and I also added more beads to the sleeve bands. The pattern called for antique glass beads and seed beads, but instead I used triangle cut glass beads and 2.5mm pearls. This gave a nice encrusted effect that I was looking for.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?I probably won't sew it again since it was for my daughter's First Communion, but I would definitely recommend it for a special occasion.
Conclusion: A lovely special occasion dress. Her veil was made of diamond white tulle with a simple plastic comb wrapped with a strip of the tulle and beaded with the same beads as the dress. I make each of my daughters their own First Communion dress, and this one suited my little girl perfectly. A couple more pics can be found on my blog
