|Pattern Description: |
A waterproof, wipe-able changing mat. This pattern is actually found in Lisa Lam's book, A Bag for Every Reason.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes, it did!
Were the instructions easy to follow?
The instructions were terrific. Well written and well illustrated with photos.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I liked the easy to follow instructions, and the full size pattern piece. I didn't really enjoy working with vinyl, and I hated the table protector that was recommended, though I understand why it was.
Laminated cotton, vinyl and dining table protector, all purchased from Fabric.com. Never having sewn with vinyl, I was unsure as to what gauge would work best, but I bought 20 gauge and I think it was perfect. The dining table protector turned out to be the weak link. It is very stiff, making it difficult to turn to the right side, and very fragile, which is not a good combination.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
I didn't make any design changes. The mat is well thought out. I did do a few things which made it easier and might help others. When sewing the clear vinyl, I sewed over a layer of tissue paper so that it would slide through my machine--otherwise it stuck fast. I also found that a walking foot worked wonders when trying to sew the layers together. I also would leave the entire bottom edge unsewn in order to safely turn the layers to the right side. I left the 7" opening that Lisa suggested, and due to the stiffness of the table protector, it was incredibly difficult to turn and the table protector tore at the seam line. I thought I had ruined the whole thing at the next to the last step! Luckily, I was able to fold the edge in a little further and complete the topstitching without the tears showing. If I were to make it again, I would like to find a substitute for the table protector. Maybe Soft and Stable as a middle layer, with more laminated cotton on top? I think it would be worth a try, as I don't think the table protector will wear well. The substitute would have to be both soft and wipe-able.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
I would definitely sew it again if another grandchild were to come along!
A great changing mat which I think any new mother would appreciate.
