|Pattern Description: |
From etsy- "The Bonny Knit Sailor top features a perfectly proportioned sailor collar, cap sleeves, princess seams and a hem band. Use the optional ribbon and button placement guides for a ship-shape nautical inspired summer top. The flattering square neckline modernizes this classic design and makes it a flattering, unexpected choice for women. The collar is finished with a simple, light, durable method often found in RTW polo shirts. "
The sizing is rather unique in that you draw your own side seam using the pattern's guide. It's quite effective, actually, and allows you to create a relaxed fit top or one that's more fitted with waist shaping. It accommodates a 30" to 55" bust.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Were the instructions easy to follow?
For the most part they were, but when it came to finishing the neckline, I was quite perplexed for a while. I would recommend this pattern for intermediate to advanced sewists, because I just can't see how a beginner would be able to figure out that neckline. It took much consideration and fiddling on my part before I figured out what the instructions were getting at.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
Overall I'm quite pleased with it. I know that Steph didn't include pictures with these Riffs to reduce on cost, but I wish she had included a diagram for just the neckline. It's the only part of the pattern that really needed illustration.
Cotton jersey from Mood.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
I created a matching skirt to wear with the top as a sort of faux-dress.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
Hmm, I don't know how many sailor tops a person needs in their wardrobe, but I can see myself sewing this again when I make a Supergirl costume for Halloween. Lengthening the collar would be perfect for creating a top with a cape.
Troubles aside, I love this top. Check out my blog post about it for more information and pictures- http://young-broke-and-fabulous.blogspot.com/2013/06/fo-bonny-knit-ensemble.html
