|Pattern Description: |
This is a simple loosely fitted button-down top by Butterick, with sleeve & collar variations.
I sewed the size 18.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Were the instructions easy to follow?
Yes, simple & straightforward.
A very bright cotton gingham shirting. It breathes well, and is very comfortable for summer. I must say that gingham sure makes buttonhole placement a breeze!
The fabric ravels badly, so I fused tiny strips of interfacing on the inside of the side seams when I pressed them open. To prevent ravelling on the sleeve seams, I cut a 1" strip of lightweight tricot to wrap seams when I sewed them together. The pattern calls for two rows of stitiching on the sleeves, so on the first round I sewed one side of the tricot, and on the other round I caught the other side of the tricot. The seam is a bound, but with no added weight to it. I washed the shirt once, and so far so good!
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
I added 1.5 inches of length, and added 1" to the sleeve band circumference.
When I made this shirt before, I had problems with fusible interfacing showing on the collar. This time, I used the fusible only on the sleeve cuffs, and used unbleached muslin to interface the collar. I think it worked well - it lies flat, and doesn't show any spots of fusible like the last time.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
This is the second version of the shirt I have made. I may try it again some day!
