|(First, apologies for the photos being on hangers - after several disasterous attempts by DH, it is obvious I need a different photographer!! I will attempt to update the photos at a later date using a different photographer ... men!)|
After sewing numerous pants patterns with varying degrees of success, I decided to give the Sure-Fit Pants Kit, that I've had, (and not used) since the late '80's a go.
This is a kit designed to create a custom fit pattern block using your unique measurements.
When I originally purchased the kit, I created and tested the kit and found the pattern almost mirrored the Burda pants pattern I had been using, so simply continued using the Burda .... fast forward to now, with a somewhat more 'mature' set of measurements and numerous fitting issues. It was time to re-visit Surefit.
Having taken a new set of measurements, it was simple to apply these to the master sheet and develop a new block for a simple pair of pants featuring a slant front pocket.
I know I should sew a toile, but to tell the truth, I'm lazy. I also figure I have so much fabric in the stash, that I'm happy to just 'give it a go' ... the worst that can happen is a donation to charity and the best, a new garment.
Since it is winter here, I chose a wool blend mix that had been given me by a friend (free fabric!) along with some lining fabric also given by the same friend - both fabrics had been sitting around since early last year. lined 2 dart front
lining (if the lining looks familiar, that's because I was given heaps, and used the same lining on an earlier pair of pants)
I followed the general instructions given by Glenda Sparling (creator of Sure-fit patterns). The pants fit beautifully in the back, though they seemed a little large, especially in the waist.
I took out 2cm from both the front and back at the waist - the back at the side seam and the front with an extra waist dart. Then narrowed the leg by 1cm from the crotch level to hem both on the side seam and inner leg. The fit was much better, and very wearable.
Next time, and there will be a next time, (this is the best fitting pant pattern I have used since acquiring my current shape!!) I will take a little more out of the front pattern piece (this is a personal preference re fit - I don't like my pants quite so full) and also lengthen the pants as I like my pants to sit just above the floor (once again a personal preference)
I am very pleased with the initial fit straight out of the box and would definitely recommend the kit.
I have since made a second pair of pants, this time from the remainder of my stashed cool wool. I did take a little out of the front, narrowed the legs and lengthened the leg and now I have a pair of pants that I'm really happy to wear.
