1 pattern package envelope for a 18th Century Corset, chemise, pannier and pockets.
These undergarments fit under pattern Simplicity 3637 (Robe a la Francaise)
The pattern goes from 8 - 14, I used size 8.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes it does. I altered the width of the pannier but the shape was right. Making corsets is not my strongest sewing feature but it did look like the envelope photo.
Were the instructions easy to follow?
Oh yes. The chemise is so easy and the pockets too. The pannier was not hard to understand, it just needed a little thinking. I'm not a good corset maker (as it turned out ^_^) but the instructions were easy enough to follow.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
Like: The easiness of the pattern and the way the pannier is accurate
enough to get the right shape for a 18th Century Robe a la Francaise
Dislike: Not a whole lot actually. I don't like the flaps at the bottom of the corset. Totally useless and they are a b*tch to put bias tape on. I would try and leave them out next time but that's just me.
For the chemise and pockets I used linen, for the pannier a cheap cotton (with steel boning) and for the corset I bought brocade, a very sturdy canvas and cotton (so it's 3 layers).
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
I embroidered the pocket because I felt like it
I wanted the gown to be wider than the pattern so the pannier had to be wider aswell. That went sort of well, apart from the fact that adding 25 centimeters on both sides makes it unstable. I have to put in a pvc pipe on the back side to stop it from bending inwards.
Me with my stupid thoughts made the corset a bit longer because another corset I made was too short. So I figured: well, gotta add some length or it comes to my belly button again. I thought wrong... It's now a bit too high at the breasts.
Learn from my mistake people!
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
Oh yes, it's easy and gives you great results.
Great pattern and the pieces don't take forever to make.
