So I bought Simplicity 1688 about a month ago and just had to sew the cropped jacket, so cute! Sadly as I couldn't find a review of it out there yet I was on my own. More photos on my blog here
I decided I had better sew a muslin to check the fit before I cut into the teal linen fashion fabric; I decided to sew a 12.
The main problem that I noticed with the fit was that the bust dart was really really high (ending several inches above the bust point). I couldn't tell if this was just on me as the bust dart is only in view A which is not pictured on the pattern. I tried cutting out a 14, but that didn't help at all, and just made the jacket huge. I ended up lowering the end of the bust dart by several inches. I think this pretty much worked, but I think that I could lower it a bit less next time.
The jacket is fully lined (which I love). The lining starts right at the neck and front edge with facing only on the bottom band and sleeve bands so there was some interesting under-stitching involved. it works pretty well, but the lining still tends to show a bit on the front occasionally, and the jacket could hang a little better, maybe with a heaver fabric…
Although I think that this might be because I really should have made a 10 – thoughts?
The plus is that I don’t much mind the lining showing occasionally, one of the best things about sewing is the chance to use an awesome lining!
The pattern had you adding interfacing to the sleeve bands and bottom band of the jacket. I left it out as I often do with interfacing (just don’t want my clothes to be stiffer generally).
I am definitively planning to sew this jacket again! I think I might make one size down and a heaver fabric for slightly cooler weather however.
The one sad thing about this jacket is that I decided to finish it for a birthday party – just when we entered a heat wave. It has been hitting highs of 90 for over a week now! Teaches me to sew a jacket in July!
