Empire line dress with midriff and slightly flared gathered skirt in three differen lengths. Bodice either cross over with straight low back and thin straps or wide straps back and front.
Pattern Sizing: 8 - 14, I sewed size 12 starting off with view D.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Not quite, as I modified the skirt.
Were the instructions easy to follow? Reasonably OK. The instructions for lining the bodice were fine but it didn't include a skirt lining which I used.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I liked the look of a low backed dress with cross over bodice and thin straps. I thought that my light weight silk would be suitable for the shape of the skirt. I was wrong on this! Once I had attached the skirt, it looked terrible, the skirt billowed out and made me look pregnant (except for the fact that I am far too old)
Fabric Used: Thai silk. I had bought this quite some time ago when on holiday and was looking forward to making something. As it was, it turned out to be very frustrating. It frayed terribly and all the handling it had when I started to remake and refit the skirt to the bodice meant that I lost quite a bit of the fabric seam allowances. In future when sewing silk like this I shall overlock the edges first.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: The gathered skirt didn't work so I remade it as a straight skirt and put a slit in the back seam. The position of the waist and midriff was a bit of a problem but I got there in the end. There are small darts in the bodice in the usual place - up from the midriff. I ended up by putting a small one in each side down from the armhole as it seemed slightly loose here. At one point I thought that my lovely silk was going to be wasted but I did salvage something though it is not perfect. I even managed to retrieve some material and used it for another top Silk top (which I will review separately)
and a bow tie for my husband. I didn't have enough silk to make a free style one that he could tie so he has to make do with pre- tied one. Bow Tie
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? No I wouldn't sew this again as it stands though I could make a modified bodice again I think more successfully. I did cut out a bodice, view A with the wide straps in a cotton fabric to make another dress, but it seemed rather shapeless on me so I abandoned it.
Conclusion: There aren't many patterns with a similar top to this so it is a bit frustrating, just need to be careful about the gathered skirt
