|I’m going through a striped fabric phase this year and am enjoying sewing a few garments with this theme. This review is for a “striped maxi”….one can’t get much more striped than that!|
MISSES'UNLINED JACKETS AND DRESSES: Close-fitting, unlined jacket in 2 lengths has front extending into single-layer tie ends (wrong side shows). Very close-fitting, pullover dresses. E and F: front seam detail, bias upper/middle fronts, and lower front/back (cut on crosswise grain of fabric). I used view F front and view D back.
Sizes are grouped in two envelopes: 6 - 14 and 16 – 22. I used my typical sizing of smaller size at neck and shoulder area and larger sizes at waist and hips.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes, I was a major copycat with use of the stripes and star.
Were the instructions easy to follow?
Yes, easy. Just a little planning on the direction of stripes and remembering to lay all sectional pattern pieces right side up on the fabric.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I liked the front pattern sections and design for maximum stripe contrasting.
I used medium and narrow orange/gray striped rayon ponte knit from Marcy Tilton. These fabrics are so wonderful!!! I got carried away and bought several striped pieces from her. Guess I’ll have to get this stripe thing out of my system. It’s my summer mission!
Worn with orange cardi wrap. It is similar to the one offered with this pattern, but is McCall 5890 reviewed here. You can tell that it shrank....my surprise after washing it. However, it now works as a cropped, tied cardi wrap....no problem!
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
I raised the neck edge. Actually, too much with the first completion. Easy fix – I cut the binding off all around including extra in the front. I used fold over stretch knit binding for the armhole and neck openings. These stretch knit bindings come in an array of colors and I bought a supply of various colors a few years ago while on a trip to the L.A. garment district and have used them on many projects over the years. This one in orange happened to match perfectly…hooray!
Because the fabric is beefy and the stretch tape has good recovery I used a shortcut to eliminate pre-measuring and pinning the tape to the opening. One gets used to the amount of tension that is required for a smooth and flat binding. In this case, not too much tension was applied to achieve a good appearance.
The steps for "fast binding" are:
1. With an extra 1.5 " tail at the beginning, start stitching the tape to the edge. The beginning and ending points should be about 1" on each side of the finishing point. (In this case, center back). Cut the extra tape off leaving 1.5".
2. Twist the ends for seaming and pin together.
3. Stitch the binding seam.
4. Cut off extra seam allowance.
5. Finally fold the tape over the remaining edge and stitch, matching the previous stitch.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
No plans to sew this again. Yes on the recommendation – obviously from the number of reviews it is a well-liked pattern.
A fun dress. Where would one wear it. Why I wore it to Lowes last evening to buy lighting, ha, ha. But the final destination was out to dinner with hubby.
